Structural Formula
Chemical Name: 2-Methyl-butanoic acid [1S-[1-alpha(R*),7-beta,8-beta(2S*,4S*), 8a-beta]]-1,2,3,7, 8,8a-hexahydro-7-methyl-8-[2-(tetrahydro-4-hydroxy- 6-oxo-2H-pyran-2-yl)ethyl]-1 -naphthalenyl ester
Therapeutic Category: Starting material used in the production of API Pravastatin Sodium
Mechanism of action: Compaction, also known as Mevastatin, is an inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase. Compactin functions by inhibiting the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, an enxyme involved in the biosynthenic pathway of cholesterol. Although Compactin is active in lowering cholesterol levels in humans, a derivative of Compactin, named Pravastatin, was found to be more efficacious in this function. Thus, generally Compactin is used as a starting material of Pravastatin.
